Details for Wind Rosettes for the Prairie Provinces

View Map in New Window

Purpose

Wind Rosettes show wind direction frequency of occurrence (%) on an annual or monthly basis. The website is designed to deliver this product in an organized and easy manner.

Description

The website is very user friendly. In the lower portion of the page the user chooses which station, normal/historic, and annual/month of interest. They click the "get rosette" button and the graphic appears in a separate window. They can then print or save the rosette. Rosettes represent the average wind direction for a given month or for an annual period. Two sets of wind rosettes were developed: historic and normal. All 86 sites met the imposed minimum data criteria of 3 years. Some sites have historic wind data back to Jan1, 1953, when wind data collection started in the prairie region. The world meteorological organization (WMO) suggests when looking at climate information the last 30-year period best reflects normal climatology. To calculate normal wind directions a minimum of 20 years of data is required for the normal period 1971-2000, 40 sites met this criteria.
